💪 Why Self-Defense?

This month, we're focusing on building confidence—a key factor in navigating life's challenges with strength and resilience. Whether it's through self-defense training, positive self-talk, or taking small steps outside your comfort zone, confidence is something we can all nurture. In this issue, we'll explore practical tips, inspiring stories, and valuable tools to help you feel empowered and ready to face whatever comes your way. Let’s take the first step toward a more confident, capable you!

🎯 Focus of the Month - Building Confidence

Confidence is part of the foundation of effective self-defense. Here are a few tips to start building your confidence when handling self-defense situations.

  1. Practice Visualization: Take a few moments each day to visualize yourself responding confidently in various situations. Picture yourself handling challenges with calm and assertiveness.
  2. Set Small Goals: Start with achievable self-defense goals, whether it’s mastering a specific technique or attending a class. Celebrate your progress along the way!
  3. Stay Aware: Awareness is key. Make it a habit to scan your surroundings regularly. Notice people, exits, and potential hazards. This simple practice can significantly increase your confidence.

🔦 Community Spotlight

Student Spotlight: Jenn V. – A Connector, Advocate, and Force for Good

Some students leave a lasting impression not just because of their enthusiasm in class, but because of the way they carry the message of self-defense beyond the classroom. Jenn V. is one of those people.

A couple years ago, I had the pleasure of leading a self-defense session for an all-female dental office—a team of strong, confident professionals who dove into the training with courage and heart. Among them was Jenn. From the start, she stood out for her positivity and her determination to empower others.

Fast forward to last year—Jenn reached out with a mission: to organize a self-defense class specifically for mothers and their daughters or sons. She took the lead, tirelessly reaching out to friends, families, and communities to bring the class to life. Her dedication didn’t stop there. Jenn also introduced me to a local hiking group, helping to arrange a self-defense and awareness session for them as well.

What makes Jenn special isn’t just that she took the class—it’s that she made it her mission to share it. She connected people, opened doors, and created opportunities for others to learn and grow in their confidence and safety. Thanks to her efforts, we held the class last month with one of the highest numbers of participants we’ve ever had. Jenn is a true advocate for awareness, empowerment, and community.

Thank you, Jenn, for being a champion of self-defense and a powerful example of how one person’s effort can ripple outward to impact so many others.

🔥 Quick Action - Question of the Month

True or False: In a self-defense situation, you are legally allowed to use any level of force necessary to stop an attacker.

Explanation: Self-defense laws typically require that the force used must be reasonable and proportionate to the threat faced. Deadly force, for example, is only justified when there is an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. Overuse of force—even in self-defense—can lead to legal consequences.

Answer: False
