The RAT Power Model

Recognize Assess Take-Action™

This simple yet powerful 3-step framework forms the foundation of our self-defense training .

Learn How It Works

“The RAT Power Model was developed through years of teaching self-defense and awareness training. It’s simple, memorable, and powerful — helping people stay calm, think clearly, and act decisively when it matters most.”

–– Lisa Davis, Founder of Power Up with Lisa

What is RAT Power?

RAT Power stands for Recognize Assess Take-Action™ and is the foundation of every Power Up with Lisa program.

It’s a simple, powerful framework that teaches you how to:

  • Recognize when something feels off or unsafe
  • Assess for potential danger
  • Take-Action to stay safe

This is the mindset behind all of our training — from individual and campus safety to workplace and community programs.

When you activate your RAT Power, you’re not just learning self-defense: you’re building awareness, confidence, and living with intention.

The Story Behind RAT Power

RAT Power was born from a lifetime of experience — and a moment of inspiration.

When I was working as a police officer, I heard it over and over again:“I knew something was off.” Every time, it struck me — people recognized the warning signs, but they didn’t trust themselves soon enough to act.

That’s when I realized real safety starts long before danger appears. It begins the moment you sense that shift — that feeling in your gut — and choose to trust it. That insight changed everything for me. I wanted to help others build that same instinctive confidence — the ability to recognize, assess, and take action before something becomes a threat.

That’s how RAT Power: Recognize Assess Take-Action™ was born — a simple, powerful framework that helps you stay aware, think clearly, and move with confidence in every part of life.

Today, RAT Power is the foundation of every Power Up with Lisa program — because empowerment starts the moment you learn to trust yourself. What started as a sisterly brainstorming session has become a guiding model that helps people everywhere spot the RAT and live powered up.

RAT Power in Action

Recognize → Assess → Take-Action

In the Parking Lot

You’re walking to your car after work and notice a van parked close to your driver’s side.

You Recognize that it feels off — your instincts tell you something’s not right.

You Assess your options and realize it’s safer to return inside and ask security to walk you out.

You Take-Action by trusting that gut feeling — avoiding a situation that could have put you at risk.

During a Night Out with Friends

You’re out with friends when someone starts getting a little too pushy and ignores your personal space.

You Recognize the discomfort and tension rising in your body.

You Assess what you need to feel safe — more distance, or direct communication.

You Take-Action by stepping back, speaking up assertively, and rejoining your group — setting a clear boundary with confidence.

Online Communication

You get a message from someone you don’t know asking for personal information or photos.

You Recognize something feels off about their tone or request.

You Assess the risks — what could happen if you respond or share too much.

You Take-Action by blocking the sender, reporting the account, and trusting your instinct to protect your privacy.
