Self-defense training doesn't just teach you physical techniques; it also teaches you awareness of potential threats and how to avoid dangerous situations. For example, self-defense classes include lessons on how to recognize dangerous behaviors, escape from dangerous places, and stay alert in public spaces.

While physical skills are crucial, the first line of defense is often your awareness of your surroundings. A confident, aware mindset can help you avoid dangerous situations before they escalate. Here’s how you can sharpen your situational awareness:
- Scan your environment: When you’re walking, always be aware of who's around you. Keep your head up, make eye contact with people nearby, and avoid distractions like looking at your phone.
- Trust your instincts: If something feels off, don’t dismiss it. Whether it’s a gut feeling or an odd situation, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the area if possible.
- Look for exits: Whether you’re in a parking lot, shopping mall, or walking down the street, always identify escape routes or areas where you can get help.
Being aware not only helps you stay out of dangerous situations but also boosts your confidence.

We’re thrilled to shine a spotlight on Catherine, one of our inspiring participants who recently attended an in-person awareness and self-defense class. Catherine’s dedication to her safety—and her eagerness to learn new skills—truly stood out. She even braved a Minnesota snowstorm to make it to class, showing determination and a strong sense of purpose.
Catherine wasn’t alone on her journey—her daughter and her friend Michelle joined her, forming an incredible team of focused, powerful learners. Together, they dove into the material, practicing each technique with impressive energy and precision.

A) Ignore them and continue walking.
B) Cross the street or enter a well-lit populated area.
C) Confront the person to see if they need help.

If you notice someone following you, it's important to stay aware and take proactive steps to ensure your safety. Always trust your instincts and avoid isolating yourself.
